For over one year now since his unceremonious exit from office, former Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome has kept a very low profile.

Koome became the third Inspector General of Police not to finish his full term after David Kimaiyo and Hillary Mutyambai.

The former IG had been in office for almost two years when he suddenly resigned in 2024 amid public uproar on police brutality at the height of the anti-government demonstrations by youths christened Gen Zs.

In November 2022, he was surprisingly appointed to become the country’s fourth IG following the exit of Mutyambai.

Prior to that appointment, the University of Nairobi- trained civil engineer served as the commandant, Police Training College- Kiganjo.

He had previously served as the Principal Assistant to the Deputy Inspector General of Police in-charge of the Kenya Police Service wing and the director of operations, police headquarters.

The one-time Nairobi regional police commander has maintained a quiet life, away from the public scrutiny that comes with his position.
