Rose Mayemba, a CHADEMA committee member, described the political environment in Tanzania as increasingly dangerous for anyone opposing the government. She said both uniformed and plainclothes officers have been involved in targeting opposition members, creating a climate of fear.
Mayemba recounted that young supporters are particularly vulnerable, with incidents of violence often occurring during or after protests. She warned that the campaign of intimidation is systematic and widespread, leaving citizens at risk in their own communities.
The political tension in Tanzania has intensified following the postponement of treason charges against CHADEMA leader Tundu Lissu. Supporters of Lissu fear retaliatory measures by authorities, further fueling insecurity among opposition members.
John Pambalu, CHADEMA’s Director of Training, accused President Samia Hassan Suluhu’s administration of using brutality and fear to silence dissent. He said hundreds of young Tanzanians have been subjected to harassment and violent attacks in recent months.
