Excitement filled Ndundune in Makueni County as residents broke into chants of “Tutam” when President William Ruto arrived to launch the Emali-Matiliku road project. The word, meaning two terms, was used by locals to show support for his leadership as he began the new development.
The President said the 20-kilometre road is part of the larger 42-kilometre Emali-Ukia project worth 1.1 billion shillings. He added that the project would open up major trading centres and improve movement across several parts of the county.
The Emali-Matiliku road will connect areas such as Kativani, Manywani, Matiliku, Kalamba, Nziu, and Ukia. It will also link Makueni to key routes leading to Wote, Kajiado, Nairobi, and Mombasa.
President Ruto said the project will help reduce transport costs and allow farmers to reach markets quickly. He explained that traders often lose produce due to poor roads and delays, something the new road seeks to solve.
He added that once completed, the road will support business growth and create more jobs in the region. The President said better infrastructure would attract investors and make rural areas more productive.
Residents praised the government for the move, saying it would bring lasting change to their communities. Many traders said the improved road would help them deliver goods safely and on time.
The Emali-Matiliku road is among several projects launched to boost infrastructure and connect rural counties to major economic zones. President Ruto said his administration remains focused on transforming rural Kenya through roads that support trade and development.
