Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s daughter, Saumu Mbuvi, has spoken out emotionally after her father publicly mentioned her mental health struggles during the burial of journalist Kimani Mbugua.
During his speech at the funeral, Sonko revealed that Saumu had once battled bipolar disorder, comparing her condition to that of the late Kimani and former boxer Conjestina Achieng’.
“My own daughter, Saumu, had the same condition as Kimani and Conjestina. I could have taken her abroad, but I chose to take her to Mama Amina for treatment, and I thank God my daughter healed,” Sonko said.
His remarks quickly drew public attention, prompting Saumu to respond through a heartfelt post on social media.
In her statement, she acknowledged her struggle with bipolar disorder but clarified that she had never battled drug addiction.
“Lately, so much has been said about me — things that cut deeply, especially because they came from people I love. I’ve been judged and misunderstood by many who never stopped to ask what I was truly going through,” she wrote.
Saumu explained that her journey had been about healing and self-discovery, not substance abuse.
“What I have never battled is drug addiction. I sought help for my mental health because I was fighting to find myself again,” she stated, adding that it was painful to be exposed by a family member.
“To anyone mocked for their mental health journey, please know you are not broken — you are human,” she continued.
“I may be bruised, but I am not destroyed. Even through tears, I choose grace over bitterness and truth over silence.”
Her powerful message has since sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many commending her for speaking up and encouraging others to view mental health struggles as a sign of strength rather than shame.
