Tension flared at the Namanga border on Thursday after Tanzanian security forces fired tear gas to block Kenyans from crossing into Tanzania, where anti-government protests are ongoing.
Some canisters landed on the Kenyan side, causing panic among traders and residents.
Interior PS Raymond Omollo had earlier warned Kenyans against joining the protests, stating that the government would take action as directed by the law.
He urged police officers at the border to follow the law while dealing with Kenyans attempting to join the protests, expressing confidence in their ability to handle the situation.
Kenyans who reacted to the incident on Facebook had this to say in the Comments:
– “What are Kenyans doing in Tanzania or what do they want to go and do there? Your country is going through a lot, yet some are trying to cause more problems.” – Yusuf Ali
– “Anyone who goes missing after joining the protests should be left alone by the government. Kenyans should know the importance of boundaries.” – Hellen
