A section of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) members has declared their support for Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga, endorsing him as their preferred presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election.

The members, who met in Meru County, said they were united behind Oburu, describing him as the rightful person to carry forward the legacy of his late brother, Raila Odinga. The leaders emphasized that the ODM party remains intact despite Raila’s death and will continue to play a key role in shaping Kenya’s political direction.

Speaking to NTV on Tuesday, October 28, ODM member Josphat Muroko said the party would front Oburu as its flagbearer under the Azimio coalition. “Doctor Oburu Oginga is our presidential candidate under ODM and Azimio. The coalition is still alive, and we will continue to work with other parties,” Muroko stated.

The leaders humorously defended Oburu’s age, citing examples of long-serving leaders abroad. “At 81, Oburu is still young. Look at Paul Biya of Cameroon—he is 92 and still serving. Oburu can lead this country effectively,” Muroko said, drawing laughter from the crowd.

Meru ODM chairperson Jack Munoru reiterated the party’s commitment to the current broad-based government but noted that a final decision on the 2027 race would be made at the right time. “ODM remains strong, united, and ready to continue Raila’s vision,” he said.

Kisumu County Deputy Speaker Nerea Okobo added that the members would carry on Raila’s spirit of justice and democracy. “Baba may be gone, but the mission continues. The king is dead, but the crown lives,” she remarked.

The Meru meeting ended with members pledging to strengthen ODM structures nationwide as preparations for the 2027 elections begin.
