Across Kenya, paediatricians and speech therapists are raising alarm over a growing number of children with delayed speech. Experts say that prolonged screen time is emerging as one of the main causes, especially among toddlers who spend hours on phones, tablets, or televisions during their early developmental years.

Health professionals explain that children learn language best through face-to-face interaction. When screens replace conversation and playtime, children miss the vital social cues that help them develop speech and communication skills. Many parents, often unaware of the risks, use gadgets to keep their young ones occupied, unknowingly affecting their language growth.

Paediatricians have reported a noticeable increase in children aged between two and five years who struggle to form words or sentences. Speech therapists say that some children can identify cartoons and songs but fail to express their needs verbally. This delay often leads to frustration, social withdrawal, or behavioral challenges as the child struggles to communicate.

Experts are advising parents to limit screen time for children under five years and instead focus on interactive activities such as storytelling, reading aloud, and outdoor play. Talking, singing, and responding to a child’s attempts to communicate are simple yet effective ways to boost speech development.

Dr. Mary Wanjiku, a child development specialist, notes that the first three years of life are critical for brain and language growth. Excessive screen exposure during this stage can disrupt attention, focus, and memory — skills necessary for speech and learning.

The Ministry of Health has also encouraged parents to attend regular child wellness clinics, where speech and developmental milestones are monitored. Early detection and therapy can help children overcome speech delays and regain normal communication ability.
