Tension and excitement filled the air in Kisii County after area Member of Parliament, Hon. Donya Aburi, made a bold proposal that the newly launched State University of Nyamira be renamed Ruto Nyamira University College in honor of President William Ruto.
The outspoken legislator made the remarks during a public forum attended by local leaders, students, and residents, sparking mixed reactions across the Gusii region.
Hon. Donya, known for his fiery political style, argued that President Ruto’s administration deserves recognition for bringing a public university to Nyamira — a project that has long been on the wish list of residents.
“It is only fair that we name this institution after the man who made it possible. President Ruto has delivered on a promise that many before him could not fulfill. Let us celebrate that by calling it Ruto Nyamira University College,” he said.
However, his statement immediately ignited debate, with some leaders supporting the motion while others dismissed it as unnecessary political praise.
Critics argued that universities should maintain neutral names reflecting regional identity rather than political affiliations.
The proposal comes hours after the groundbreaking ceremony for the State University of Nyamira, presided over by Education CS Julius Ogamba, Environment CS Soipan Tuya, and West Mugirango MP Stephen Nyamoko.
The project has been hailed as a major step toward improving higher education access in the Gusii region and stimulating local economic growth.
Political analysts believe Donya’s remarks highlight growing political realignment in the region as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Despite the controversy, MP Donya has stood by his proposal, insisting that honoring President Ruto would motivate future leaders to deliver tangible development.
For now, the statement has stirred lively conversation across Nyamira and Kisii, reflecting the deep intersection of politics, development, and identity in Kenya’s public life.
