The family of the late Fidel Odinga, son of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has been locked in a long court battle with his ex-wife, Lwam Getachew Bekele, over his wealth and inheritance.

The case, which has lasted several years, has drawn public attention because it involves one of Kenya’s most prominent families.

Fidel Odinga died suddenly in January 2015, leaving behind property, investments, and businesses.

He was also a father to one son, whom he shared with his ex-wife, Lwam Getachew.

However, Fidel did not leave a written will to show how his estate should be divided, leading to disagreements between Lwam and the Odinga family.

Lwam went to court claiming that, as the mother of Fidel’s son, she had the right to manage his estate.

She said she wanted to protect her son’s future and ensure that his inheritance was safe.

Lwam also accused some members of the Odinga family of trying to deny her and her son what she believed was rightfully theirs.

In her argument, Lwam told the court that she was Fidel’s legal wife at the time of his death, even though they were living separately.

She asked the court to recognize her as his next of kin so she could administer the estate on behalf of their son.

The Odinga family, however, opposed her request. They argued that Fidel and Lwam had already separated before his death and that she should not be allowed to control the estate.

The family said the estate should instead be managed by Fidel’s parents, Raila and Ida Odinga, to ensure fairness and transparency.

The court has been hearing evidence from both sides, including documents, witnesses, and statements from lawyers.

The case has raised important questions about inheritance rights, marriage separation, and the protection of children in such disputes.

Many Kenyans have followed the case closely, with some urging both parties to seek peace for the sake of Fidel’s young son.

Others have said the case shows the need for people to write wills to prevent family conflicts after death.

As the legal process continues, both sides remain firm in their positions. For now, the battle for Fidel Odinga’s assets continues — a story that highlights how even powerful families can face deep challenges over love, loss, and legacy.
