A Kenyan woman’s years of hard work and sacrifice in Saudi Arabia have been tragically undermined by a devastating act of betrayal from her own brother.

Maureen Mbatha, who spent over a decade working abroad to support her family, returned home only to discover that her sibling had misused a large sum of money she sent for an important investment. The trouble began when an opportunity arose to purchase a piece of land in their home area for 150,000 Kenyan shillings.

Unable to travel back, Maureen entrusted her biological brother with the task, sending him the money via M-Pesa to complete the purchase.

Reports indicated that instead of completing the deal as instructed, he deceived her and traded the plot for another one that was smaller in size and located in an undesirable area.

The land was said to have cost 130,000 shillings and measured barely a quarter of an acre.He is also reported to have pressured her into accepting the deal by claiming that other buyers were interested in the property.

This betrayal came after Maureen had worked in Saudi Arabia for eleven years, a journey she undertook to escape poverty and secure a better future for her son.

Despite challenges such as lack of education and having her passport withheld during her early days, she persevered through determination and faith.

Her case has now drawn attention to the risks faced by many migrant workers who send money home with the hope of building a stable future, only to suffer betrayal at the hands of those they trust the most.
