Police clashed with University of Nairobi students on Wednesday, September 3, after a protest over missing examination results turned chaotic in the city centre. The students, mainly from the medical school, marched along University Way demanding answers from the administration regarding delayed grades and withheld marks.
The demonstration began peacefully as learners gathered near the main campus chanting and waving placards. Traffic came to a standstill after protesters blocked the road with stones and burning debris. The action disrupted transport in the busy area and forced motorists to seek alternative routes.
Tension rose when police officers arrived at the scene to disperse the crowd. Teargas canisters were fired, triggering panic among students and passersby. Some students retaliated by throwing stones, sparking running battles that spread into nearby streets. Businesses around the area temporarily closed their doors as the situation escalated.
The students accuse the university of failing to release results for exams taken in April. They argue that the missing marks have put their academic progress in jeopardy and left many uncertain about graduation scheduled later this month. According to the protesters, the delay has also locked them out of applications for internships and further studies.
Normal operations at the institution were paralyzed as striking students vowed not to return to class until the matter is resolved. Activities at the medical school, including lectures and practical sessions, were suspended as learners joined the protest.
The protest follows growing unrest within the student body in recent weeks. In early August, the University of Nairobi Students Association had briefly suspended another planned strike after the administration promised to review accommodation charges. However, frustration over unresolved academic issues has reignited anger on campus.
