Safaricom Mpesa

Safaricom has provided guidance to M-Pesa users who accidentally send money to incorrect till or paybill numbers, a problem many Kenyans frequently encounter.

Subscribers can initiate a reversal using the M-Pesa app or by dialling the USSD code *456#. Safaricom emphasized that reversals usually take up to 72 hours for the funds to reflect back in the sender’s account.

The telecommunications firm advised users to double-check recipient details before sending money to avoid such errors. Reversal requests are straightforward and can be done immediately after the mistaken transaction.

To request a reversal, users should dial *456# or open the M-Pesa app, select “reversal request,” and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the process.

For “Buy Goods” transactions, Safaricom can assist in reversing the money. In contrast, paybill reversals are usually handled by the organization that received the funds, requiring the sender to contact them directly.

M-Pesa business tills allow businesses to receive payments and use the funds immediately for operations. Businesses such as supermarkets, pharmacies, boutiques, and delivery services commonly use this service. Safaricom charges 0.55% for money collected on tills, but amounts below KSh 200 are free of charge.

The paybill service enables businesses to collect payments from clients, including utility bills, through a unique account number, providing convenience for both recurring and one-off transactions.

Safaricom noted that errors can occur despite safety measures like the Hakikisha mechanism. If funds go to the wrong recipient, the reversal process must be completed before sending the money to the intended person.
