Governance expert Cathy Irungu has raised concerns over the ongoing Social Health Authority scandal, terming it one of the most alarming governance failures in recent times.

Irungu argued that the handling of the matter by senior government officials reveals a worrying trend of negligence within the executive.

She pointed out that Cabinet Secretary for Health Aden Duale’s claims of being unaware of developments surrounding the scandal only highlight a broader culture where accountability is consistently evaded until issues are exposed publicly.

According to Irungu, the pattern has been that state officials only respond once scandals make headlines, giving the impression that they are detached from their responsibilities.

She said this approach undermines trust in institutions and demonstrates a lack of proactive governance in safeguarding public resources.

The governance analyst further noted that the SHA scandal is not just about mismanagement but also a test of the government’s willingness to confront corruption within its own ranks.

She warned that Kenyans are growing increasingly frustrated with leaders who appear more reactive than preventive in matters of accountability.
