Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has added his voice to the heated debate surrounding Harambee Stars’ exit from the 2024 CHAN tournament. In a post shared on his social media platforms, Sonko disclosed that Kenya has officially lodged an appeal with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over the two disallowed goals in the quarter-final clash against Madagascar.

He urged Kenyans to remain hopeful, noting that a favorable decision could potentially see the Stars reinstated.

“Kenya has filed an appeal against our two disallowed goals. Let us now pray and wait for CAF’s decision. We might go back to Kasarani again,” his statement read.

Sonko’s remarks came just hours after Kenya’s heartbreaking elimination in front of a packed Kasarani Stadium.

Many fans felt the referee’s controversial calls played a decisive role in denying the national team a historic semi-final berth.

The key talking point of the night was Ryan Ogam’s 51st-minute strike, which was ruled out after the referee spotted a foul in the buildup.Ogam had calmly slotted the ball past Madagascar’s goalkeeper Toldo, sending the stadium into wild celebrations.

However, the joy was short-lived after the referee ruled that Ben Stanley Omondi had committed an infringement before setting up the chance.

Earlier in the second half, Kenya had taken the lead through Alphonse Omija, who rose highest to head home a well-taken Boniface Muchiri set-piece.

The momentum was clearly with the Stars until the disputed call turned the tide.

Despite the setback, Sonko’s optimism has sparked fresh debate among fans, with many expressing hope that CAF could overturn the controversial decisions.
