Ex-Mungiki leader Ndura Waruinge has made startling revelations about his past, disclosing that his rise to influence within the outlawed sect was partly fueled by financial support from powerful politicians.
Speaking candidly about his time at the helm of Mungiki, Waruinge revealed that he received significant backing from political figures, which helped him consolidate power and expand the group’s activities across the country.
According to Waruinge, the involvement of politicians was not just in the form of moral support but also financial injections meant to secure loyalty and influence during election cycles.
He claimed that his position as a youth leader made him attractive to those seeking to mobilize large numbers of young people for political purposes. In turn, the funding he received allowed him to live lavishly, rising to the status of a millionaire by the time he was just 17 years old.
His admission sheds light on the murky links between politics and crime in Kenya, a subject that has often surfaced but rarely been confirmed by individuals at the center of such movements. Waruinge confessed that the wealth and power he accumulated at a young age were intoxicating, pushing him further into the dangerous lifestyle that Mungiki became infamous for.
The former leader also reflected on how the allure of easy money and influence blinded him to the dangers of the path he had chosen. He noted that while politicians used him and the movement to advance their own interests, the burden of violence and social disruption was left on ordinary Kenyans.
