Nestled at the foothills of Mount Kenya, just north of the equator lies Nanyuki—a strategic hub for Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and allied military units.
Encompassing around 300 acres, the sprawling military land known locally as “Kwambuzi” hosts the largest single military camp in Kenya and internationally significant facilities such as Nyati Barracks, part of Laikipia Air Base .
Nyati Barracks is home to steely-eyed formations of the Kenyan Army, including the 1st Kenya Rifles, a legendary infantry battalion based in Nanyuki.
It also hosts the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK)—a constant presence of about 300 British troops, bolstered by local staff and their families—facilitating advanced joint training exercises with KDF .
This site is both a staging area and headquarters for diverse military activities.
Under BATUK’s coordination, up to six infantry battalions train annually in Laikipia, engaging in combined-arms drills, mechanised infantry operations, civil engineering, and medical outreach missions .
These exercises often involve multinational forces—including U.S. Army and other regional partners—for interoperability training, anti-poaching patrols, and UN/AU peacekeeping preparedness .
Beyond traditional military drills, the camp promotes civic engagement. Royal Engineers-led infrastructure projects benefit local communities, while medical deployments deliver essential healthcare in remote areas .
Outreach extends to schools and wildlife conservation efforts, such as dental hygiene classes and rangers’ tracker training—an investment in both health and ecological protection .
Occupying 300 acres, Nyati Barracks is the epicentre of comprehensive training that melds tactical proficiency with humanitarian action.
It reinforces KDF’s operational capabilities, strengthens Kenya’s strategic partnerships, and provides tangible benefits for Laikipia’s local population.
