Onyonka n

Drama unfolded at the Senate on Thursday when Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka angrily walked out of a committee session after a heated exchange with Nairobi Senator Tabitha Mutinda.

The two senators clashed during a sitting of the Senate Health Committee, where tensions flared over a disagreement on the handling of public health facilities in Nairobi and Kisii counties.

According to sources present, the argument escalated when Mutinda questioned Onyonka’s submission, accusing him of politicizing health matters instead of focusing on solutions. Onyonka, visibly upset, accused Mutinda of being disrespectful and dismissive of issues affecting Kisii residents.

“I will not sit here and be lectured like a schoolboy!” Onyonka shouted before storming out of the session.

Attempts by the committee chair to restore order failed, as both senators continued exchanging words. Fellow lawmakers were left stunned by the outburst, which temporarily brought proceedings to a halt.

The confrontation has sparked debate among Senate watchers, with some calling for a review of conduct rules to maintain decorum in committee meetings.

While neither senator has issued a formal statement, the clash highlights deepening political tensions as the Senate grapples with critical service delivery issues across counties.

Observers say such incidents undermine the Senate’s role as a forum for sober debate and policy oversight.

The committee is expected to reconvene next week, though it remains unclear whether Senator Onyonka will attend or seek an apology before rejoining the discussions.
