Hundreds of mourners gathered on Saturday, July 26, to say goodbye to Wizzy Mavela, a popular matatu conductor known for his vibrant personality.

Mavela tragically passed away at the age of 32 after being struck by another matatu on July 18.

His funeral attracted fans, fellow matatu crew members, and public figures from all over, who came to honor his memory.

Mavela was famous for his work on the “Opposite” matatu, which was well-known in Nairobi for its eye-catching red and white design and artistic graffiti.

His death shocked the city’s transport community, leading many to express their grief on social media.

Fans remembered him as a kind and passionate individual who brought joy to his work.

Although several politicians attended the burial, they were not allowed to speak.

This decision was made to keep the focus on Mavela and his contributions to the community.

The “Sonko Rescue Team,” a former initiative by ex-Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, provided the hearse for the occasion, showing their support for Mavela’s family during this difficult time.

Though the team had been disbanded, they returned to honor him.

The burial was a heartfelt event, with Mavela’s body placed in a custom red-and-white casket that reflected the colors of the matatu he loved.

Many mourners shared their memories of him, calling him a legend and celebrating the impact he had on their lives.

Senator Karen Nyamu was among the notable figures in attendance. She paid tribute to Mavela, highlighting his influence on the Eastlands matatu community.

Nyamu described him as “vibrant” and “full of life,” noting that he will be missed by many.

TikToker, Gaddafi wa Koch proposed to Karen Nyamu during the service, which quickly went viral online.
