Judy Mugo

Judy Wambui Mugo, widow of the late police officer Harrison Mugo Mwangi, has publicly shared how her husband — once a caring father and diligent officer — spiraled into depression following the tragic death of their son in 2019.

According to family accounts, the grief overwhelmed him. “He was a caring father and family man… after the loss, depression consumed him,” she said.

Reports indicate that Harrison’s emotional struggles became evident when a video of him intoxicated on Nairobi’s Jogoo Road went viral.

He was later reprimanded by senior police officials for misconduct — a symptom, the family believes, of his deep trauma.

Tragically, he died by suicide in 2022, leaving Judy to face both grief and financial hardship.

Despite Harrison’s years of loyal service to the police force, Judy was informed she does not qualify for a pension because her husband’s death was ruled as suicide. This, she says, amounts to a betrayal of his service and sacrifice.

Judy’s story has triggered public outrage, with many Kenyans calling for urgent reforms to pension policies and stronger mental health support for security officers and their families.
