In her own ways, she is continuing to inspire the upcoming generation of women aspiring to make it in the military.

Her life is that of someone who has defied all the odds to rise to the rank of a two-star general in the Kenya Defence Forces.

For the 30 years that she has worked in KDF, Major General Joyce Sitienei has steadily risen through the ranks, from an Officer Cadet to her current rank.

From a high school teacher, the urge to join the military pushed her to be enlisted into the Kenya Defence Forces in 1995. And from there, Major General Sitienei has never looked back.

An education officer in the KDF, Major General Sitienei is best remembered for her long service as the director of the International Peace Support and Training Centre.

In the 2025 military changes by President William Ruto, Major General Sitienei became the second woman in the history of the KDF to attain the rank of a two-star general after former Kenya Air Force commander, General ( Rtd ) Fatuma Gaiti Ahmed.

Now serving as the Deputy Vice Chancellor in-charge of Centre of security and strategic studies at the National Defence University-Kenya, Major General Sitienei is the woman to watch.
