Investigations into the brutal murder of Ugandan returnees David Mutaaga and his wife, Deborah Florence, have taken a chilling turn after police released a suspect’s image and disturbing audio clip from the day of the killings.
The elderly couple, both in their late 60s, were found stabbed to death at their residence in Entebbe on July 6, shortly after returning from Switzerland where they had lived for over 30 years.
According to investigators, the assailants may have been motivated by robbery, but no firm conclusion has been drawn.
Security officials extracted the suspect’s image from CCTV footage at the Mutaaga home. In the footage, a man is seen wearing a black balaclava, long-sleeved shirt, red trousers with white side stripes, blue gloves, and holding what appears to be a firearm.
He reportedly gained entry by scaling the perimeter wall and left through the main gate.
In a more harrowing twist, an audio clip captured during the attack was also released. In it, the man can be heard addressing Deborah:
“We suffered, your children have studied, me I have not studied. I am at home suffering. Now go to hospital. Deborah! Come and help your husband. He is here dying.”
The Uganda Police Force is appealing to the public for help in identifying the suspect. A reward of UGX 50 million (approximately KSh 1.8 million) has been offered for information leading to his arrest.
“We urge anyone with information to contact us via +256 769 675 918,” read the police statement. The case is being handled in collaboration with other regional and international security agencies.
Two casual workers at the home were taken in for questioning, while several neighbours have already provided statements. Police are also analysing local surveillance footage and communication records from the area.
Meanwhile, the Mutaaga family has requested privacy and urged the public to refrain from speculating as investigations continue.
Their children, who reside in Zurich, did not attend the memorial service in Uganda due to security concerns but paid tribute to their parents virtually.
