Quiet Aftertoon at Kakamega High School turned tragic when a Form Three student, David Owino Oduor, collapsed and died moments after scoring a goal during a friendly football match on the school grounds.
David, known among his classmates as the team’s top striker, had just netted a beautiful header when he suddenly dropped to the ground, leaving his teammates and teachers in total shock.
The match, which was meant to be a casual and relaxing game, quickly turned into a scene of panic.
According to the school’s Chief Principal, Dr. Julius Mambili, the incident happened at around 2:14 p.m. “It was a normal afternoon game.
He scored, then collapsed. It was sudden. There were no signs of illness prior to this. He was very active and healthy,” Mambili said during a press briefing.
The school administration acted quickly and rushed David to Kakamega County Government Teaching and Referral Hospital.
Sadly, he was pronounced dead on arrival. His untimely death has left the entire school community in mourning.
“It wasn’t a competitive match,” Dr. Mambili added. “The students were just enjoying themselves like they always do. It’s something they look forward to, but today it ended in pain.”
Students and teachers who witnessed the incident are said to be deeply shaken.
The school has since suspended all sports activities temporarily to allow time for counseling and reflection.
Grief counselors have been called in to support those most affected by the tragedy.
