A somber mood engulfed the Makenji area along the busy Thika-Kenol Highway after a tragic accident claimed the life of one woman and left another seriously injured.
The heartbreaking incident occurred as a mother and her daughter attempted to cross the highway on their way to Montezuma Funeral Home to collect the body of a deceased relative.
According to eyewitnesses, the two were in the process of crossing the road near the Makenji area when a speeding lorry rammed into them.
The impact of the crash was so intense that one of the women died on the spot, while the other sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Residents and motorists who witnessed the accident were left in shock, unable to comprehend the cruel twist of fate that turned a moment of mourning into another tragedy for the family.
They were clearly crossing carefully, but the lorry was speeding and didn’t seem to slow down,” said one witness at the scene.
Police officers from the area quickly responded and managed to control the situation, temporarily halting traffic along the busy highway.
Authorities have since launched investigations into the accident, with many calling for stricter enforcement of speed limits along the Thika-Kenol stretch, which has become a black spot for road accidents.
The deceased’s body was taken to Montezuma Funeral Home, ironically the very place she was headed to.
As the family grapples with a double tragedy, Kenyans are once again reminded of the urgent need for road safety measures to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
