Shockwaves are rippling across Kenya’s political and corporate circles after former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko released a damning audio clip exposing an alleged bribery attempt worth Ksh150 million per month.
In the explosive recording, a man believed to be a senior official from JamboPay, a digital payment company, is heard offering Sonko Ksh5 million daily in exchange for supporting their bid to collect revenue for Nairobi County.
“You’ll be getting five million a day if you’re okay with it,” the voice tells Sonko in the tape.
Sonko, always unpredictable, didn’t take the bait. Instead, he worked secretly with the DCI (Directorate of Criminal Investigations) and recorded the conversation using special surveillance equipment. Once armed with the evidence, he handed over the audio file to the detectives.
Immediately after the handover, DCI officers reportedly raided JamboPay offices in Upper Hill, seizing computers, documents, and communication devices in a bold move to crack open the bribery network.
This isn’t the first time JamboPay has been in the spotlight. The company previously handled Nairobi’s revenue collection before their contract was terminated during Sonko’s administration. The new audio suggests attempts to regain their lucrative position using underhanded means.
