Residents along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway are breathing a sigh of relief after DCI detectives in Voi arrested three notorious suspects believed to be behind a string of violent highway robberies.

The arrests follow a dramatic operation that brought down the criminals who recently staged a daring attack on a truck driver and his co-driver at gunpoint.

The suspects, who had been terrorizing motorists, especially truck drivers, along the busy highway, were tracked down through a well-coordinated undercover mission led by Voi-based officers.

According to police reports, the criminals had perfected a technique of posing as stranded motorists or roadside vendors to lure unsuspecting drivers before ambushing them in isolated sections of the highway.

In the most recent incident, the trio flagged down a long-distance truck under the guise of needing help.

As the driver slowed down, they pulled out firearms and ordered the driver and his co-driver into the back of the truck, where they were tied up and robbed of cash, phones, and other valuables.

The robbers later abandoned the victims in a thicket several kilometers away.

DCI officers revealed that the breakthrough came after reviewing CCTV footage from nearby fuel stations and analyzing mobile phone signals, which helped trace the suspects’ movement.

Upon arrest, police recovered a pistol, several rounds of ammunition, and stolen property linked to previous robberies.

“This is a major breakthrough in our efforts to curb highway crime,” a senior DCI officer said. “We are intensifying patrols and working with local communities to ensure our roads remain safe.”

The suspects are currently in custody and will be arraigned in court as investigations continue.

Authorities have urged other victims to come forward and help build stronger cases against the criminal gang.
