Traders and residents in Githurai, Ruiru, and parts of Kiambu County are living in fear following the resurgence of armed criminal gangs that have taken over public spaces, extorted businesspeople, and unleashed a wave of violence.
According to a report by People Daily, the gangssome of them armed with crude weapons and firearmshave been targeting matatu operators, traders, and shop owners, demanding protection fees and violently punishing those who resist.Victims narrated being beaten, robbed, and threatened as the gangs re-establish control in busy areas like Githurai 45 and Ruiru town.
A matatu driver plying the Githurai–CBD route told People Daily that he has been forced to pay a daily fee to gang members who hover around the stage, threatening to damage vehicles or cause chaos if not paid.
“They charge KSh 300 per trip and if you don’t give them, they can beat you or slash your tires. It’s worse than before,” he said.
Shopkeepers have also raised alarm over the growing number of youths loitering in groups, harassing customers and demanding “security money” under threat of violence. The extortion has created a climate of fear that has seen some businesses reduce working hours or close entirely.
Residents said the criminals operate openly, even in broad daylight, with little intervention from authorities. The police have been accused of laxity, with some victims claiming they are turned away when reporting such cases.
“We don’t feel safe anymore. These boys are fearless and well-organized. We need urgent help,” said a trader in Ruiru.
Local leaders have condemned the attacks and called for immediate police action to dismantle the gangs before the situation gets out of control.
As security deteriorates in what were once thriving business hubs, traders and commuters now live under a cloud of fear, hoping the government will act swiftly to restore order.
