Mariam Nabatanzi Babirye, a woman from Nakuru, has shocked many with her powerful and heartbreaking story. Married off at just 12 years old, Mariam’s life took a difficult turn early on. Today, she is a single mother raising 44 children on her own after her husband abandoned the family.
Mariam’s marriage was not one of choice. She was forced into it by her family, and her husband, who was much older than her, reportedly mistreated her. Despite all this, she gave birth to 44 children, including multiple sets of twins, triplets, and even quadruplets. Doctors later confirmed that Mariam has a rare genetic condition that makes her release multiple eggs during ovulation, which explains the high number of multiple births.
Tragedy struck again when her husband walked away, leaving Mariam to take care of all the children by herself. She has since taken on the full responsibility of feeding, clothing, educating, and sheltering her large family.
To support her children, Mariam does various jobs. She brews local herbs, bakes cakes, lays bricks, cuts hair, and even makes and sells herbal medicine. Every single shilling she earns goes into making sure her children never go to bed hungry or miss school.
Despite the challenges, Mariam remains strong. She says that her children are her biggest blessing. “I will do anything for them. They are all I have,” she said in an interview. Many of her children have big dreams — some want to be doctors, others teachers, and a few dream of becoming engineers.
Mariam’s story has drawn sympathy and support from people across Uganda and beyond. Some well-wishers and organizations have stepped forward to help her with food, school fees, and medical care.
Still, Mariam continues to work tirelessly. She hopes that one day her children will have better lives and break the cycle of poverty and hardship.
Her courage and dedication have made her a symbol of strength and resilience for single mothers around the world.
