Allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have been charged with terrorism-related offences in a dramatic turn of events that has sent shockwaves across the political landscape.
The arrests were made early Monday morning as security agencies moved in swiftly, detaining several close associates of the former DP. Authorities claim the suspects were involved in orchestrating acts intended to incite chaos during the recent wave of anti-government protests.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the individuals face charges that include financing unlawful assemblies, plotting attacks on government installations, and coordinating with extremist elements.
The suspects are currently being held at a high-security facility, and are expected to appear in court later this week.
Supporters of Gachagua have condemned the charges, terming them politically motivated and aimed at silencing opposition voices. “This is a witch-hunt. These are trumped-up charges meant to intimidate leaders who speak the truth,” said a former MP allied to Gachagua.
Legal analysts have noted that terrorism charges carry heavy penalties, including life imprisonment, depending on the outcome of the investigations and court proceedings.
Gachagua, who has maintained a low profile since leaving office, has not issued a statement, but sources close to him suggest he is preparing to address the nation soon.
The news comes at a time when the country is facing growing unrest, with youth-led protests and internal divisions threatening national stability.
