A wave of discontent is brewing among General Service Unit (GSU) officers stationed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), as they raise concerns over poor remuneration and what they term as an “unsustainable” allowance structure.

The officers, who play a critical role in ensuring national security at one of East Africa’s busiest airports, have expressed frustration over stagnant pay and lack of proper recognition for their demanding duties.

According to sources within the unit, the officers feel sidelined despite their high-risk assignments. “We work long hours in a sensitive environment, yet our allowances do not reflect the nature of our service,” lamented one officer who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Currently, the officers are said to be receiving allowances that fall below expectations, especially considering the cost of living in Nairobi and the intensity of airport-based operations.

Some have also pointed out disparities between their pay and that of officers deployed in other government units, further fueling resentment.

Calls are now growing for the government and relevant security authorities to review the officers’ pay package, with the aim of restoring morale and ensuring fairness.

“We are not asking for luxury just dignified compensation for the work we do,” another officer stated.

The National Police Service is yet to issue an official response to the concerns raised.

This latest development adds to the growing chorus of voices within Kenya’s disciplined forces demanding better working conditions and respect for their service.
