The Netherlands has strongly condemned the violence and destruction witnessed during Wednesday, June 25, 2025, anti-government protests across Kenya, calling for respect for the rule of law and accountability for all those involved in criminal acts.
In a statement released early Friday, June 27, 2025, the Dutch Embassy in Kenya, through Human Rights Ambassador Wim Geerts, expressed deep concern over the deadly events that unfolded on June 25.
The embassy extended condolences to the families of victims and solidarity with those who lost property during the unrest.
“We offer our condolences to the victims and their families. Our thoughts also go out to those whose businesses and property were looted and destroyed,” the statement read in part.
Ambassador Geerts urged the Kenyan government to uphold the constitution and protect fundamental freedoms, including the right to life, freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and access to information.
He stressed the importance of balancing public order with the protection of civil liberties.
The Netherlands also raised alarm over reports of criminal elements infiltrating peaceful protests, attacking civilians and police officers, and fuelling chaos in the streets.
“We are concerned about reports of criminal elements disrupting peaceful protests and attacking civilians and police officers,” Geerts said.
The statement called for independent and transparent investigations into all reported cases of violence, including extrajudicial killings, abductions, looting, and destruction of property.
The Dutch government maintained that accountability is essential not just for delivering justice but also for restoring public trust in Kenya’s institutions.
“All perpetrators of violence should be held accountable… through institutions that ensure independent and transparent investigations,” the statement added.
The remarks come amid mounting international attention on Kenya following nationwide protests on June 25, when thousands of citizens—many from the Gen Z generation—took to the streets to commemorate those killed in last year’s demonstrations and to protest rising living costs and a wave of abductions targeting government critics.
While the protests began peacefully, they quickly turned chaotic, with several areas reporting violent clashes, destruction of property, and injuries. Businesses were looted, and civilians caught in the crossfire were forced to flee for safety.
The Netherlands joins other diplomatic missions in urging restraint, dialogue, and justice for victims as the country navigates ongoing political and social unrest.
