A Kenyan woman who moved to the United States to start a new life with her Mzungu (white) husband has opened up about her painful experience, saying things are very different from what she expected.

The woman, whose identity is withheld, said she met her American partner through social media. After months of sweet conversations and promises of love, the man invited her to the U.S., and the two got married shortly after her arrival. She had high hopes of a good life filled with love, peace, and financial comfort.

However, reality hit hard. “Mambo kwa ground ni different,” she said, meaning life on the ground is different from the expectations.

According to her, the man changed completely after marriage. “He was loving online, but in real life, he became cold and controlling,” she revealed. She said she was not allowed to go out freely or make phone calls back home. Her access to money was also limited.

The woman, who had left behind her job and family in Kenya, found herself lonely and frustrated in a foreign land. “I used to think life abroad is easy, but I cried most nights,” she said.

She also faced cultural shock and discrimination. “I didn’t know anyone. I had no job, and the people around us treated me like I didn’t belong,” she added.

Her situation worsened when she tried to speak out. The man threatened to cancel her immigration papers if she dared to leave or report him.

Eventually, with the help of a Kenyan support group in the U.S., she found the courage to leave the toxic relationship. She is now rebuilding her life and encouraging other women to think carefully before rushing into overseas marriages.

“Don’t just look at the Mzungu and think life will be perfect. Be sure of who you’re marrying. Don’t go blindly,” she advised.

Her story is a reminder that not all that glitters is gold, and women should be cautious before making life-changing decisions based on social media love.
