J Blessings

Multi-award-winning cinematographer and music director Jibril Blessing, popularly known as J Blessing, has opened up about the profound impact his late mother’s love had on his life — both as a source of strength and, eventually, a struggle that led him to seek therapy.

Speaking in an emotional conversation with DJ Moz, J Blessing revealed that he completed therapy two years ago after realising that the emotional void left by his mother’s passing had deeply affected his adult relationships and personal development.

“It was positive when she was alive, but growing up, it became negative because I had not experienced the kind of love she gave me again,” he shared.

He recalled his mother as a devoted, hardworking woman who did everything possible to provide for him, often sacrificing her own well-being. J Blessing believes this selflessness contributed to her early death, which occurred on the morning of his birthday.

“She made sure there was food on the table. She fought for me,” he said. “When she got sick, we went to stay with my aunt and uncle. She was ill for about two years, and it got into me. She even told me, ‘Do you think I’ll make it to your birthday?’ and then she died on that morning.”

Reflecting on life after her death, J Blessing admitted that the emotional shield she once provided left him vulnerable and confused. This led him to act out, becoming rebellious and desperate to find the kind of unconditional love he once knew.

“That affected me even growing up. I got hurt very easily and felt like people were against me because they couldn’t give me what I expected. Therapy really helped,” he concluded.

His story is a powerful reminder of how childhood experiences, even rooted in love, can leave lasting imprints on one’s emotional journey.
