The man at the center of the storm, Officer Samson Talam, finally had his say or rather, his lawyer did in a packed Nairobi courtroom today.
Talam, who has been named by the DCI boss Mohamed Amin as the main suspect in the mysterious death of blogger Albert Ojwang, is now trying to clear his name.
Through his lawyer, Talam claimed he wasn’t even around when Ojwang was arrested or locked up at Central Police Station.
According to him, Talam got a call saying Ojwang was in bad shape and only showed up after that.
The defense says that alone proves he had nothing to do with what happened to the 31-year-old blogger and teacher.
This version of events is a direct attempt to poke holes in the accusations piling up against him, especially after the DCI pointed fingers his way last week.
Ojwang’s death has triggered protests and loud cries for justice across Kenya, with many saying it’s yet another case of police brutality being swept under the rug.
But the prosecution wasn’t having it they told the court that Talam’s role still raises serious questions, especially with CCTV footage from his office mysteriously tampered with. They’re asking the court to keep him behind bars as investigations continue.
Politicians have also joined in, saying justice must be served and this time, for real. No cover-ups. No excuses.
