Edwin Sifuna has ignited a fierce political clash by challenging Senator Kiprotich Arap Cherargei to produce proof of a coalition agreement signature. The challenge followed claims by Cherargei that Sifuna endorsed a government deal at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
Sifuna, the ODM Secretary General, dismissed the accusation and demanded Cherargei present the alleged document. He warned that failure to do so would force him to believe allegations made by Senator Kipchumba Murkomen about Cherargei’s time in law school.
According to Cherargei, Sifuna was part of a coalition signing alongside President William Ruto and Raila Odinga. He claimed that Sifuna fully backed the deal, which included cooperation areas like the implementation of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) proposals.
Sifuna, however, denied signing or endorsing the agreement. He clarified that he only outlined the areas of collaboration but never committed to any formal deal. His response framed Cherargei’s claims as misleading and politically motivated.
The mention of Murkomen adds an interesting twist to the saga. Once a close ally of Raila Odinga, Murkomen has since switched sides and is now a critic.
Sifuna’s threat to revisit Murkomen’s past comments about Cherargei brings a personal angle to the political standoff.
The controversy is rooted in a March 7 event at KICC where several leaders gathered for what was described as a unifying agenda. Whether Sifuna signed the agreement or not remains at the heart of the dispute.
This political face-off highlights the deep divisions within Kenya’s leadership. It also exposes tensions ahead of the 2027 elections, where coalition alignments and individual credibility will likely shape the national conversation.
As the standoff continues, the pressure on Cherargei to prove his claim grows. Sifuna, on the other hand, is positioning himself as both firm and defiant, determined to challenge what he sees as falsehoods within Kenya’s political arena.
