Opposition leaders Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper party head Kalonzo Musyoka have urged Kenyans to stay away from work on June 25.

They announced the day as a symbolic public holiday to honour Generation Z protesters who died during the 2024 anti-government demonstrations.

While addressing roadside rallies in Voi, Taita Taveta County, on Saturday, June 7, 2025, Kalonzo urged the nation to stand in solidarity by observing the stay-at-home call.

Even though opposition leaders do not hold the legal power to declare a public holiday, a role reserved for Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, their appeal could still cause major disruptions in several towns.

This comes after Gachagua asked the residents of the Mount Kenya region to unfollow and stop listening to musicians who visited Deputy President Kithure Kindiki last week.

President Ruto’s allies condemned Gachagua’s comments as “tyrannical” and “dictatorial,” warning that such utterances threaten the unity and freedom of expression enshrined in Kenya’s democracy.

According to Dennis Itumbi, Gachagua’s call for musicians to be unfollowed and denied event bookings based on their political associations is not only economically reckless but also spiritually dishonest.
