A bold political suggestion by analyst Kavuli Bernard has stirred debate over the 2027 Nairobi gubernatorial race. In a tweet posted on June 4, 2025, Kavuli urged former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to throw his weight behind Embakasi East MP Babu Owino for the city’s top seat.
“Now that Raila has endorsed Sakaja, Mr. Rigathi Gachagua should support Babu Owino for Nairobi Governor. Despite this, Babu will still secure massive support across Nairobi’s 17 constituencies,” Kavuli posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The analyst’s comment came shortly after reports confirmed that ODM leader Raila Odinga had backed incumbent Johnson Sakaja for re-election. Kavuli’s take suggests that with strategic alliances—especially from leaders like Gachagua—Babu could mount a strong challenge.
Nairobi, with over 2.4 million registered voters according to the IEBC, remains a key battleground with national political implications. The race is already showing signs of becoming one of the most competitive in the country.
Babu Owino, known for his youthful appeal and grassroots mobilization, has often positioned himself as a voice of the urban voter. With Sakaja now enjoying ODM’s official support, any split in voter loyalty could shape the capital’s political future.
Kavuli, a journalism student turned influential online commentator, has never shied away from controversial political opinions. Despite facing personal threats and even surviving a reported kidnapping in 2024, he continues to use his platform to shape political conversations.
